What is the Church, and what is it called to proclaim?

In The Church and the Wonderful Works of God, this sermon returns to Acts 2 and the Day of Pentecost to examine the biblical origin, identity, and mission of the Church as established by Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Rather than treating the Church as an institution, program, or social organisation, this sermon traces the meaning of the biblical term ekklesia — the “called-out ones” — and shows how the Church is defined by its relationship to Christ, its obedience to His call, and its Spirit-given purpose.

Drawing from Acts, the Gospels, the Epistles, and the Old Testament, the sermon examines:

  • The founding of the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2)

  • The meaning of ekklesia and its roots in Christ’s call to “follow Me”

  • The Church as the body, household, and bride of Christ

  • The role of the Holy Spirit in giving the Church utterance

  • Why the Church exists to proclaim the wonderful works of God

  • The opposition faced by the Church when it faithfully bears witness

  • The Church’s continuing mission until the return of Christ

Central to the sermon is a question often overlooked: What were the disciples actually saying when the Spirit gave them utterance?

Acts 2 gives a clear answer — they spoke of the wonderful works of God.

This, the sermon argues, remains the defining task of the Church in every age.

This is not a sociological study of religion or a discussion of church structures.

It is a biblical examination of the Church as Christ’s body on earth — called, empowered, opposed, and sustained to bear faithful witness to what God has done.
